Lord Caitanya delivered crocodile by chanting holy names!

Lord Caitanya delivered crocodile by chanting holy names!

💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐

Once, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came with devotees to a lake.
The lake is in Nabadwip Dham, near Godrumdwip—when we go on parikrama, you can see that place.
Mahaprabhu offered the devotees, “Let’s sit by the lake,” but one of the cowherd men of that area told Him, “Do not go there! A crocodile lives in that lake.Even the cows are afraid and do not drink water from that lake.”
Mahaprabhu already knew everything, and hearing the words of the cowherd man, He started chanting.
When the crocodile heard Mahaprabhu chanting the Holy Name, it turned into a dev-sisu, a child god.
The boy paid obeisance to Mahaprabhu and started to cry. Mahaprabhu asked him why he was crying, and the boy told Him everything—what had happened and how he became a crocodile.
It happened four ages ago, during Satya-yuga.
At that time, there was a forest near Vrindavan called Kamyavan.
Once, when Durvasa Muni was sleeping in that forest, childishly the boy decided to played a naughty prank on him—he cut his sikha.
Durvasa Muni became very angry and said, “I am giving you a curse. You will become a crocodile and stay as a crocodile in a pond for four ages. When the Lord Himself comes in Kali-yuga as Gauranga Mahaprabhu, He will come to that pond and chant the Holy Name. By the power of the Holy Name you will get benefit and your curse will be removed—you will get your form back.”
The child god concluded his story, “Just now You have chanted the Holy Name and I have got my form back—You rescued me from the crocodile’s body. You gave me Your mercy, and I am happy. Now with Your permission I would like to go back to my parents.”
You can understand from this story the power of the Holy Name. Always chant the Holy Name, wherever you are—there are no rules or regulation.
You will see what the Holy Name is and that the Name can even remove big-big diseases… Always chant the Holy Name—it is the dharma, the religion of Kali-yuga.

Śrī Snāna Yātrā

On the full moon day in the month of Jaistha, Śrī Puruşottama- Jagannātha 's Snāna Yātrā festival is performed. During this time, Śrī Jagannātha, Śrī Balabhadra, and Śrī Subhadrādevī are brought to the snana-vedi or bathing platform in a similar way as Pahāṇḍī Vijaya is done. There a grand bathing ceremony is performed on the three Deities and Sudarsana with 108 gold pitchers of water.

After the bathing, the Lord accepts the form of Ganesa. It is said that in order to bathe Śrī Jagannātha with pärijit-scented celestial Ganges water, all the great sages and demigos carry that water on their heads and visit Sri Purusottama Delima, and under the leadership of Brahma, they bathe the Supreme Lord on the bathing platform and offer lavish prayers.

So that the demigods can freely sit and watch the Lord's grand bathing cer emony, the exalted devotee King Indradyumna would erect a canopy and other large curtains bedecked with emeralds around the bathing altar during the bathing ceremony. In due course of time, that bathing platform became very old, and King Anangabhimadeva constructed the present bathing altar.

On Snäna Yatra day, the bathing altar of Sri Jagannātha is decorated with various jewels, pearls, garlands, cumarus, flags, and sanctified by cool water mixed with fragrant sandalwood pulp and saturated with the aroma of fragrant incense. There after, the servants of Sri Jagannātha fetch water from the well located in the southern direction and after filling the golden pitchers with this water scented with fragrant objects and purified by pavamani mantras, perform the adhivasa ceremony in the temple according to the rules and regulations mentioned in the stras. Then after offering colorful powder, they prepare to take Lord Sri Jagannātha to the bathing arena along with Sri Balarama, Sri Subhadra, and Sri Sudarsana,

When the Deities are taken to the bathing arena, the servants who are duly appointed, recognized and regarded by the king, fan Them with camaras and fans made of palm leaves. Fearing that due to carelessness some fault may occur, the servants cover the entire body of the Deities with beautiful silk cloth as they take Them to the bathing platform. At that time, when they lift Sri Jagannātha, who is worshipable by the entire universe, the demigods in the heavenly planets think and consider like this. "Perhaps Sri Jagannātha wishes to come to the heavenly planet."

Thinking like this the demigods fix their eyes on the husband of Lakşmi and chant, "O Rāma! O Krsna! All glories to You! All glories to You!" In such a dra matic way, the Supreme Lord's abhiseka is performed on the bathing platform on His birthday in the month of Jaistha.

The Supreme Lord Jagannātha has said that in the second part consisting of the four yugas of Svayambhuva Manu's reign, and in the beginning of the first part of Satya-yuga, He appears simply by the influence of Svayambhuva Manu's sacrifice. He has descended on the full moon day in the month of Jaiştha. This is why that day is Sri Jagannātha 's auspicious birthday. According to His order, on that day after performing the adhiväsa, Sri Jagannātha 's bathing ceremony on the bathing altar is conducted with great pomp according to the scriptural rules and regulations for bathing.

The exalted devotee King Indradyumna used to celebrate Sri Jagannātha 's Appearance Day festival in this procedure on the full moon day in the month of Jaistha, Sri Jagannātha has said to King Indradyumna:

"There is an indestructible banyan tree on the sea shore. On the north of that, there is a well, the water of which is filled with the waters of all holy rivers, but at present it is covered with sand. First I had created the well so that I can take bath. and I have descended. Therefore you need to discover that well. First you should duly Satisfy the protector, Kşetrapäla and the Dikpälas, and then on the day of caturdasi, you have to renovate that well accompanied by blowing of conchshells. playing of drums and so on. The twiceborn will fetch pure water from that sancti fied well and with that water, Sri Jagannātha, Sri Balabhadra, and Subhadrädevi along with Brahma will be bathed in the morning on the full moon day in the month of Jaistha."

According to these direct instructions given by the Supreme Lord to King Indradyumna, even today Sri Snäna Yatra is performed at Purusottama in this way. After the bathing, Sri Jagannatha and Sri Balarama are dressed as Ganesa or in the elephant vesa.

It was the order of Sri Jagannātha to the great devotee King Indradyumna that after performing the grand bathing no one should see the Lord, who is without full paint and decoration, for fifteen days. As is stated in the Utkala Khanda Chapter 29, verse 29: tatah pañcadašāhāni snäpayitva tu mām nrpa acitram vă virūpam vā na paśyeta kadacana."

According to this order of Sri Jagannātha, the doors of the temple remain closed for fifteen days. Because the Lord cannot be seen during this period, it is called Anavasara Käla. During this time the Gaudiya Vaisnavas, who are under the shelter of vipralambha bhava or the mood of separation, go to see Sri Ālālanātha  following in the footsteps of Sri Guru and Gauränga.

For fifteen days the Lord resides in a room called Khatasesa grha or Nirodhana grha located next to Sri Jagamohana.

During Snāna Yatra, in order to expand the beauty of His human-like pastimes, Śrī Jagannathadeva manifests the pastime of suffering from fever after the bathing. Thinking that Sri Jagannathadeva is suffering from fever, the dayitapatis offer Him pacana or a sweet drink and during this period every day they offer sweets to Him. The bathing altar or platform of Sri Jagannathadeva is situated so high in the outer courtyard that from Badadanda or the main road of Puri, the pilgrims can see Śrī Jagannathadeva's Snäna Yatra and make their lives successful.

Nava Yauvana or Netrotsava

Every year after Snāna Yatrā, Śrī Jagannatha, Śrī Balabhadra and Śrī Subhadrādevī are repainted. This is called Śrī Angaraga. During Angaraga there is no darśana of Śrī Jagannathadeva for fifteen days. Thereafter when Jagannāthadeva manifests in a fresh form and gives darśana while decorated with various garments and ornaments, that festival is called Netrotsava or Nava Yauvana. The rules and regulations for the Deities Angaraga seva for a fortnight after Snāna Yātrā is described in the fifteenth chapter of Nīlādri Mahodaya.

Srila Baladeva Vidyabhushana

 Srila Baladeva Vidyabhushana

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

Srila Baladeva Vidyabhushana was born sometime in the eighteenth century, in Odisha. At a very early age, he finished his studies of grammar, poetry, rhetoric and logic and then went on pilgrimage.

During his travels he met  Sri Radha-Damodara Deva a grand-disciple of Sri Rasikananda Deva with whom he discussed philosophy. Sri Radha-Damodara Deva explained the conclusions of Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy as expounded by Sri Gaurasundara and requested him to consider the unlimited mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

In a very short time he became an expert in Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy. He then moved to Vrindavana to further study these teachings under Sri Vishvanatha Chakravarti Thakura who instructed him in achintya-bhedabheda-tattva.

One day, in Jaipur, in the royal court, the Ramanuja sampradaya began arguing a case in connection with the Gaudiya sampradaya. They informed the king that the Gaudiya sampradaya had no commentary on the most important revealed scripture of Vedic religion—Vedanta; therefore they had no siddhanta and no real sampradaya, or school. As a consequence they should give up their service of the deities of Govinda and Gopinatha, and entrust with those who were bona fide members of a genuine sampradaya. At that time, the king of Jaipura was a follower of the Gaudiya sampradaya. He immediately sent word of the controversy by messenger to Vishvanatha Cakravarti Thakur in Vrindavan, wanting to know if the Gaudiya sampradaya actually did have any commentary on theVedanta.  If there was, the king wanted that the commentary be sent immediately to Jaipur to satisfy the scrutiny of the pandits from the Ramanuja Sampradaya.

At this time, Shri Vishvanatha Chakravarti was very old and infirm. It was impossible for him to  make the arduous journey to Jaipur. He sent his student and disciple, Shri Baladev, in his place. Baladeva Vidyabhusan was an expert scholar in all the important scriptures. In the midst of a huge assembly of pandits from the Ramanuja sampradaya, Baladeva challenged them all to argue with him in scholarly debate. A long, and hard-fought debate took place, with tumultuous arguing from the Ramanuja school. Still, none of them could stand before his conclusive statements, keen scholarship, and penetrating intellect.  Baladeva argued that the founder of the Gaudiya Sampradaya, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu established the Shrimad-Bhagavatam as the topmost commentary on Vedanta.  The Bhagavatam itself claims that it is bhashyanam brahma-sutranam, the natural commentary on Vedanta. This is confirmed on the basis of evidence given by Jiva Goswami in his Sat Sandarbha. Therefore, the Gaudiya sampradaya has chosen to accept Shrimad-Bhagavatam as the original commentary on Vedanta, and sees no need for a separate commentary.

At that point, the pandits from the Ramanuja sampradaya shouted: "He admits that there is no commentary! They have no commentary!" Having no other recourse, Shri Baladeva Vidyabhusan promised to show them the Gaudiya commentary on Vedanta within a few days. The pandits were astonished to think that such a thing existed.  They were suspicious that this might be some kind of trick, but were silenced for the time being.

Very troubled within his mind, Shri Baladeva Vidyabhusana went to the temple of Shri Govinda, the deity of Rupa Goswami. After offering his eightfold obeisances before the deity, he related everything that had taken place. That night in a dream, Shri Govinda told him, you must compose the commentary.   That commentary will be personally sanctioned by me. No one will be able to find any fault in it.  Seeing this in his dream, Baladeva became very happy, and his heart was full of strength, ready for the task at hand. After this, he meditated on the lotus feet of Govinda and began writing his commentary.  Within a few days it was completed. This commentary became known as the Govinda Bhashya commentary on Vedanta.

In an addendum appended to the Govinda Bhashya, after it was published, Shri Baladeva has written, vidyarupam bhushanam ye pradaya, khatim nitye teno yo mamudarah, Shri govinda-svapna-nirdishtha bhashye, radhabandhurangah sa jiyat.  "May Shri Govinda be all glorious.  By his mercy, he  revealed this commentary to me in a dream. The commentary revealed by him is especially appreciated by the highly learned, and as a result of this  I have been given the name Vidyabhushan, but it is Shri Govinda who deserves all credit. May that Shri Govinda who is the most dear life and soul of  Shri Radhika,  be all-victorious."

With the Govinda Bhashya commentary in hand, Baladeva Vidyabhushan arrived at the assembly hall of the king, where the pandits were waiting for him. When he showed them his commentary, they were speechless. The Gaudiya sampradaya was proclaimed victorious.  The king and all the Gaudiya Vaishnavas were supremely happy.  At that time the pandits gave Shri Baladeva the name "Vidyabhushana," or one whose ornament is knowledge, in honor of his great scholarship.  The year was 1628, Shaka era. From the day forward, the king of Jaipur decreed, everyone would attend the aroti of Shri Govinda, the deity beloved by the Gaudiya Vaishnavas, who was ultimately responsible for such a wonderful commentary on Vedanta.

The Ramanuja pandits, falling under the influence of Shri Baladeva Vidyabhusana, accepted him as their acharya and wanted to become his disciples. With great humility, Baladeva Vidyabhushana refused, explaining that there are four sampradayas, among which the Shri Sampradaya is a genuine school that preaches servitude to God as the best religious process. By advancing the views of the Gaudiya sampradaya, he meant no disrespect to the Shri sampradaya.  To insult the Shri sampradaya would be a great offense, he said.

Shripad Baladeva Vidyabhushan returned from Jaipur to Vrindavan carrying the message of his victory.  Upon returning, he submitted to the lotus feet of Shri Vishvanatha Chakravarti Thakura and told him the news. All the visiting Vaishnavas and the residents of Vrindavan were delighted, and Vishvanatha Chakravarti Thakura bestowed his blessings upon Baladeva Vidyabhusana.

Pandava Nirjala Ekadasi

 Pandava Nirjala Ekadasi

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

The description of Nirjala Ekadasi, which occurs during the month of May/June, is found in the Brahma-vaivarta Purana in the conversation between Vyasadeva and Bhimasena.

Once Bhimasena, the younger brother of Yudhisthira, inquired from the great sage Srila Vyásadeva, "O most learned and wor shipable grandfather, please hear my request My elder brother Yudhisthira, mother Kuntidevi, brothers Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva, and Draupadi do not cat anything on the day of Ekadasi. They, especially Yudhisthira, always tell me that I should also fast on Ekadasi. But I always tell them that though I know that to fast on Ekadasi is an injunction of the scriptures, I cannot bear my hunger and therefore I am unable to fast. I can give in charity as per my capacity, I can worship Lord Kesava with proper rules and regulations, but I cannot fast. So please instruct me how can I obtain the result of Ekadasi without having to fast."

On hearing these words of Bhimasena, Sri Vyásadeva said, "O Bhima! If you want to go to the heavenly planets and avoid the hellish planets, then you must refrain from eating on both the Ekádasis of each month"

Bhima said, "O great sage! It is impossible for me to observe fast on 24 Ekadasis every year, as instructed by the Lord. What to speak of fasting day and night I cannot even tolerate my hunger for even a moment The fire of hunger known as 'brika' is always present within my stomach, and it is extinguished only by voracious cating. But with great endeavor I can fast only one day in a year Therefore please instruct me about a vow that I can follow to attain auspiciousness both in this life and the next."

Sri Vyasadeva said, "O King! You have already heard from me about the Vedic religious principles and the duties of the human beings. But in this age of Kali not everyone is capable of following those rules and regulations. Therefore I will tell you about a sublime method by which you can achieve great results. This method is the essence of all the Purdnas Anyone who observes the Ekadasis of waning and waxing moons by fasting never goes to hell."

Hearing Vyasadeva's words, that strongest warrior Bhimasena became frightened and shivered like a leaf on a banyan tree and said, "O grandfather! What should I do? I am totally unable to fast twice a month throughout the year Therefore, O my Lord, kindly instruct me about one vow that awards the most merit and how by observing it I can achieve all benefits"

Then Sri Vyasadeva replied, "The Ekadasi which occurs during the waxing moon in the month of May June during the sun's presence in either Taurus or Gemini Rasi is called Nirjala Ekadasi One should observe total fast even from drinking water in this Ekadasi. On this day one should perform acamana for purification by drinking that amount of water in which a single mustard seed or a drop of gold can be immersed. One should place the said amount of water in his palm held in such a way as to resemble a cow's car. If one drinks more or less water than this, it will amount to drinking of wine

"One must not eat anything at all on this Ekadasi, otherwise his vow will be broken One should not drink even water from the movement of sunrise from the day of Ekadasi until the sunrise on the day of Dvadasi. In this way if one strictly observes this Ekadasi without drinking water then he can attain the results of observing all the Ekadasis of the year

"In the early morning on the day of Dvadasi one should take bath and give gold and water in charity to the brahmanas. There after the follower should gladly eat with the brahmanas

"O Bhimsena! Now please hear the about the picty one ac cumulates by observing this Ekadasi. By following this Ekadasi one can achieve the result of following all the Ekadasis throughout the year Once Lord Visnu, who holds a conch, a disc, a club and a lotus flower in His hand, told me, 'If a person gives up all varieties of religion and surrenders unto Me and follows this Nirjalä Ekadasi which is very dear to Me, he is certainly relieved of all sinful reactions. One cannot attain the supreme destination by giving wealth in charity or attain any benefit by following smarta rules and regulations in the Kali-yuga. In fact the Vedic religious principles have been extinct in this age of Kali which is polluted with various faults.

"O son of Vayu! What more can I tell you? Eating is actually prohibited on all the Ekadasis, and even the drinking of water is prohibited on Nirjala Ekadasi By observing this Exádal one achieves the picty of visiting all the holy places At the time of death such a person is not approached by the fierce-looking Yamadūtas, rather he is approached by the divine looking Visnudutas to be transferred to the abode of Visnu If one gives water and cows in charity after observing this Ekádasi then he is freed from all his sinful activities"

When the other Påndavas heard about the glories of this Ekadasi they resolved to observe it. From that day onward Bhimasena began observing this Nirjala Ekadasl, which became famous as Pandava Nirjala, or Bhimseni Ekadasi By following this Ekadasi sinful activities as huge as Sumeru or Mandra Mountain are at once burnt to ashes O King! Lord Krana has declared that any pious activities such as taking bath in holy places, giving charity, chanting Vedic mantras, and performing sacrifices that are carried out on this Nirjala Ekadasi day become inexhaustible

One who reads or hears the glories of this Ekádali with deve tion goes back to the abode of Vaikuntha. The result one attains by observing the vow of Amavasya conjoined with Pratipada and offering oblations to the forefathers during the solar eclipse is attained simply by hearing the glories of this Ekadasi.

Shyamananda Prabhu

Shyamananda Prabhu was a great devotee of Lord Chaitanya. He was a contemporary of the great Acharyas Srinivasa Acharya and Narottama Dasa Thakura. The three were eternal associates of Lord Chaitanya incarnated to spread His teachings after the Lord’s disappearance. They studied under Srila Jiva Goswami in Vrindavan. They created a resurgence of Lord Chaitanya’s Bhakti movement in Bengal and Orissa, where it was flagging in the period after the Lord had left the planet.

Birth & Childhood

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

Shri Syamananda made his appearance at Utkala in the village of Dharenda Bahadurpur. His father’s name was Shri Krishna Mandal and his mother’s name was Shri Durika. Shri Krishna Mandal, who descended in the line of sad-gopas, had many sons and daughters who unfortunately passed away before the birth of this son. For this reason this son was named Dukhiya.

Everyone said that this child would be a very high-souled saintly person. “On the full moon day of the month of Caitra he has taken his birth at a very auspicious moment, by the mercy of Lord Jagannatha. It is as though Lord Jagannatha has personally brought him here in order to propagate His teachings, and therefore He is personally maintaining him. He looks just like a new cupid. One’s eyes and mind are soothed just to look upon him.”

As time passed, the purificatory rites, his first taking of grains, tonsure (the hair-cutting ceremony) and the rites for beginning his education were performed, one after the other. The scholars were astounded to see his profound intellect. Within a short period he completed his studies of grammar, poetry and rhetoric. When he heard of the glories of Shri Gaura-Nityananda from the Vaishnavas of his village, a very deep attachment to Their lotus feet developed in him.

Shri Krishna Mandal was himself a very advanced devotee. Seeing that his son was always absorbed in thinking of Gaura-Nityananda. He told him that he should be initiated into the divine mantra.

The boy replied, “Shri Hrdaya Chaitanya is my guru. He is at Ambika Kalna. His guru is Shri Gauri dasa Pandita. The two brothers, Shri Gaura-Nityananda, are eternally present in his house. If you give your permission, I will proceed to there to become his disciple.” His father asked, “But Duhkhiya, how will you get there?” “Father, there are many people from here who go there to bath in the Ganges. I will go with them.”

Meeting his Guru and got Initation

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

His father deliberated for a great while on this matter and after going so he finally gave his permission. Thus Duhkhiya set out for Gaudadesa. Gradually he came to Navadwipa, then Santipur and finally Ambika Kalna, where he inquired from the local people where he might find the house of Gauri dasa Pandita. Outside the gate of the mandira, he fell down and offered his dandavats. Shri Hrdaya Chaitanya happened to be passing by at this time. Hrdaya Chaitanya Prabhu looked at him for a few moments and then asked, “Who are you?”

Dukhiya replied, “I have come to serve Your lotus feet. My home is at Dharenda Bahadurpur. I was born in the caste of sad-gopas. My father’s name is Shri Krishna Mandal. My name is Duhkhiya.”

Shri Hrdaya Chaitanya was very pleased by this sweet speech. He told the boy, “From now your name is Krishna das. Since early this morning I was feeling that someone would come today.”

Shri Krishna dasa began his service with great devotion, and on an auspicious day his guru initiated him into the divine mantra. Shri Hrdaya Chaitanya could see that his new disciple was extremely intelligent and at the same time very devoted, so he ordered him to go to Vrindavana to study the literatures of the under the tutelage of Shrila Jiva Gosvami. Shri Krishna das bowed his head in assent, and on an auspicious day he set out for the holy dhama. At the time of his departure, his guru gave him many instructions and conveyed through his disciple his obeisances to the lotus feet of the Gosvamis of Vrindavan.

Vrindavan yatra  and meeting Jiva Goswami

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

Duhkhi Krishna das first came to Navadwipa. After inquiring from someone as to the whereabouts of Shri Jagannatha Misra Bhavan, he came there and went inside. Seeing Shri Isana Thakura, he fell down and offered his obeisances. Isana Thakura then asked him who he was, and so the boy introduced himself. Isana Thakura blessed him and he remained there that day.

The next day he set out for Mathura with a party of pilgrims. Upon coming to Gaya Dham he took of the lotus feet of Shri Visnu there. He remembered Mahaprabhu’s lila of accepting initiation from Shri Ishvara Puri here and became overwhelmed in ecstatic love. From Gaya he came to Kasi Dham where he met with Tapan Misra, Candrasekhara and the other devotees, and he offered his salutations to their lotus feet. They in turn blessed him.

He finally entered Mathura Dhama. After taking bath at Visrama Ghata, he took darsana of Shri Adikesava and rolled on the ground in the dust of the birthplace of Shri Krishna. From here he proceeded towards Vrindavana where, after learning the where abouts of Shrila Jiva Gosvami, he offered his obeisances to the lotus feet of that great acharya. After being asked, he introduced himself with full particulars.

“Gurudeva has committed me to your charge. His petition to Your Divine Grace is, ‘I am entrusting Duhkhi Krishna das to your care. Please fulfill his mind’s desire and send him back to me after some time.’”

Shrila Jiva Gosvami was extremely happy to receive Duhkhi Krishna dasa into his care. Krishna das very carefully began to serve Jiva Gosvami as well as study the literatures of the Gosvamis.

Srinivasa Acharya and Narottama dasa Thakura also came to Shri Jiva at this time to study under him. Thus Krishna das had the opportunity to meet them.

Meeting with Srimati Radharani

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

Krishna das requested Shrila Jiva Gosvami for a special service. Shri Jiva instructed him to sweep the forest grove of Sevakunja everyday. From that day he began to carry out this service with great pleasure. He felt that his life had become successful. As he swept, tears flowed from his eyes. Sometimes he would loudly chant the names of Shri Shri Radha-Govinda and sometimes he would become inert while remembering Their pastimes. Sometimes he would put the broom, which was full of dust, on his head. Even Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva pray to receive a little of this dust of Vrindavana on their heads.

The Lord of Vrindavana and His consort were very pleased with the service of Krishna das, and desired to grant him Their darshan. One day while Krishna das was cleaning the kunja, his heart filled with love. Just then he happened to notice a very beautiful ankle bracelet lying in the dust. He picked it up, touched it to his head and then bound it in the corner of his upper cloth. “I’ll give it to whom ever it belongs to when they come to look for it,” he thought.

The next morning the were quite shocked when they noticed that Shrimati Radharani’s left ankle bracelet was missing. Radharani explained, “Last night, when I was dancing in the kunja, it must have fallen off. Please look for it and bring it back to me, who ever finds it.”

When the gopis came to search for the bracelet, Visakha devi noticed Krishna das sweeping the grove. She asked him, “Have you found an ankle bracelet here?” Duhkhi Krishna dasa was so mesmerized by her sweet words and radiant form, which was like that of a demigoddess descended from heaven, that he simply stared at her dumbfounded. Again she asked him, “Have you found an ankle bracelet here?”

Duhkhi Krishna made obeisances and humbly replied, “Yes, I found it. Who are you?”

“I am a cowherd girl.”

“Where do you stay?”

“In this village.”

“Is it your ankle bracelet?”

“No it isn’t mine. It belongs to a new bride in our house.”

“How did it get here?”

“She came here yesterday to pick flowers and it must have fallen off then.”

“All right, then please tell her she can come and collect it from me.”

“No, you can just give it to me.”

“No, I want to give it to her personally.”

After a few moments, Visakha devi returned with Shrimati Radha Thakurani who stood in the shade at the foot of a large tree. Visakha called out to Krishna dasa, “Bhakta, the person who lost her ankle bracelet has come to receive it.”

Duhkhi Krishna das completely forgot himself while gazing, even though it was from some distance, at the unparalleled, brilliant splendor of Shri Vrsabhanunandini. In great joy he handed the ankle bracelet to Visakha. At this point, Duhkhi Krishna dasa could sense that something very profound was about to take place. His eyes filled with tears and he fell down on the ground to offer his obeisances. In great ecstasy he rolled in the dust.

Visakha then told him, “O best of the devotees! Our Sakhi wants to give you a benediction to express her gratitude.”

Duhkhi Krishna dasa saw the holy waters of Radha kunda before him. After offering his obeisances, he immersed himself in her waters. Thus he attained a transcendentally beautiful feminine form. Coming out of the sacred kunda, he stood before Visakha devi and offered prayers. Taking this ‘forest sakhi’ by the hand, Visakha approached Shrimati Radha Thakurani, and the new sakhi fell down at Her lotus feet. Then Shrimati Radharani decorated her forehead with tilaka using the ankle bracelet and the kumkum of her lotus feet.

“This tilak will remain on your forehead. From today you will be known as Syamananda. Now you can go.” After She said this, Shrimati Radha Thakurani and Her sakhis were no longer to be seen. Dukhi Krishna dasa’s trance broke and he found himself as before, alone and in his male body: yet with the tilaka applied by Shrimati Radharani still on his forehead. Being overwhelmed with emotion, he repeated over and over, “What have I seen?”

“What have I seen?”, while tears of ecstasy rolled down his cheeks.

After reciting prayers hundreds and hundreds of times to Shri Radhika, he finally returned to Shrila Jiva Gosvami. Shri Jiva Prabhu was struck with wonder when he saw the brilliant new design of tilaka on his young student’s forehead. After offering his prostrated obeisances, Dukhi Krishna dasa, his eyes brimming with tears, recounted at Jiva Goswami’s request his experience in Sevakunja.

Hearing of his great fortune, Shri Jiva was elated, but cautioned Dukhi, “Don’t reveal this blessed event to anyone. From today, just carry on with the name Syamananda.”

Noticing that Dukhi Krishna dasa’s name and style of tilaka had for reasons unknown been changed, the Vaishnavas naturally began to discuss this strange development amongst themselves. The news finally reached Ambika Kalna. When he heard of the seemingly unauthorized behavior of his disciple, Hrdaya Chaitanya Prabhu was unsettled and angered. He immediately set out for Vrindavana.

Arriving there some months later, he let it be known he wished to see the rest while Dukhi Krishna dasa, Syamananda came and offered his prostrated obeisances at his gurudeva’s lotus feet.

Seeing his disciple’s tilaka, Hrdaya Chaitanya Prabhu was enraged and exclaimed, “Your conduct towards me is completely abominable.”

“I had fixed the form of your tilak, but you’ve erased it. In its place you have adopted a new form. I hereby renounce you. Leave this ashram this very moment” he commanded.

He continued to chastise him The Vaishnavas finally managed to restrain and pacify him by offering various explanations on Syamananda’s behalf. Syamananda simply tolerated it all with an unfaded countenance and continued to serve his gurudeva faithfully.

Eyes filled with tears, Shyamananda looked on silently. Feeling a bit sorry for him, Hriday-Chaitanya said, “if you wash away that tilak and put on the old one again, I can withdraw my order.”

But poor Shyamananda could not wipe out the tilak mark from his forehead. As soon as he wiped it, it emerged by itself on his forehead again.

Shyamananda left the ashram and went away.  He stayed on the banks of the yamuna without taking any food.

That night, Shri Hrdaya Chaitanya Prabhu had a dream in which Shri Radha Thakurani appeared in a very severe mood. She rebuked him by saying, “I am the one who, being very satisfied by Dukhi Krishna dasa’s service, changed his tilaka and his name. What do you or anyone else have to say about it?” Hrdaya Chaitanya Prabhu prayed for forgiveness at the lotus feet of Shri Vrajesvari and considered what an offender he had become.

Hriday-Chaitanya realized his mistake and ran all the way to the river and gathered Shyamananda in his embrace. Placing him in his lap, he embraced him again and again in great affection. With his eyes brimming with tears he repeated, “You are so fortunate.”

Shri Hrdaya Chaitanya Prabhu remained at Vrajadhama for a while and then, after instructing Syamananda to remain with Shri Jiva Gosvami for some more days, he returned to Gaudadesa.

Leaving Vrindavan and going out for Preaching

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

Shri Syamananda, Srinivasa and Shri Narottama began to pass their days in great bliss, studying the literatures of the goswamis and begging a little to eat from door to door. The three of them resolved to continue in this way and thus devote the better part of their time to serving and worshipping Shri Krishna in Vrindavana.

The goswamis held a council together and decided that these three should be sent to Gaudadesa to preach the teachings of Mahaprabhu as presented in the gosvami literature. One day Shrila Jiva Gosvami called the three of them together and informed them of this decision. Thus the three of them accepted that order on their bowed heads.

Thereafter, on an auspicious day Shrila Jiva Gosvami sent them on their way with a large, nicely decorated container filled with scriptures. But the books were stolen by the dacoit king, Sir Hambhir, in Bisnupur. There Srinivasa Acharya prabhu remained behind to recover the books while Narottama continued on towards Kheturi and Syamananda proceeded to Ambika Kalna. Arriving there, Syamananda paid his obeisances to his guru, and Shri Hrday Chaitanya Prabhu embraced him and inquired about the well being of the gosvamis of Vrindavana. When he heard that the books of the gosvamis had been stolen in Bishnupur, he was very concerned.

Syamananda served the lotus feet of his guru in great happiness and in this way passed his days. At this time most of the devotees of Lord Chaitanya in Orissa had all passed away. Thus the preaching of Mahaprabhu’s teachings had all but come to a halt. Hrdaya Chaitanya Prabhu considered this a very serious problem and finally instructed Shyamananda Prabhu to go there to carry on the preaching of Mahaprabhu’s mission.

Syamananda was at first very sad that he would have to be separated again so soon from his spiritual master, but Shri Hrdaya Chaitanya Prabhu explained clearly that he had no other alternative but to accept this order on his head.

The Story of Sher Khan

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

When his studies were complete. Syamananda travelled to re spread the teachings of Chaitanya Mahapisho. Even though wa only one generation since the presence of Lord Chaitanya, Orissa til already become a bad place to live People were living in fear of the violent Afghan rulers who didy tiike Vaisbaas at all. One such Pathan ruler was named Sher Khan

At this time. Shyamananda had many of his own disciples. One day he was leading them in a unirtan party dancing and chanting in the streets Hearing the blissful chanting, Sher Khan became extremely angry and forcibly stopped the kirtan party ordering them never to chant and dance in this way again. The devotees didn't care The very next day Shyamananda gathered even more devotees and led them through the streets Sher Khan now became infuriated. He and his soldiers stopped the devotees, broke the mrdangas and threw the karatals into the river. At this point Shyamananda began to shout the holy names of Radha and Krishna very loudly Immediately Sher Khan and his followers began to cough blood, and their beards caught fire. They panicked and took to their heels.

Sher Khan Surrenders

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

The next day Shyamananda again led the dancing sankirtan party into the streets. This time, when Sher Khan heard them he ran towards them and fell before them in the dust, offering his obeisances to Shyamananda. In a shaken voice he revealed, "Last night I had the most terrible nightmare. The Supreme Lord, Allah, appeared before me and was very angry. He slapped my face again and again and told me that He is the same as your God. He revealed to me His golden form as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and He told me that you should initiate me into the chanting of the Holy Name." Shyamananda felt satisfied with the surrender of Sher Khan. According to the will of the Lord, he initiated him, giving him the name Chaitanya Das. In this way Shyamananda converted many Muslim Pathans into devotees of Lord Krishna Eventually the whole of Orissa was again turned into a Vaishnava.

His Final Days

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

One day Shyamananda received the message that his dear guru, Hridoy Chaitanya, had passed away. This broke his heart, and he felt unable to continue his preaching activities. With the help of his disciples, he over came his sorrow and pressed on. Then shortly afterwards, he received another message-his dear disciple Damodar had also passed away. This was a great shock for Shyamananda. He fell sick, and although he received the best medical care, he never recovered. In the middle of the seventeenth century he passed away in a town called Narasinghapur in Orissa. His foremost disciple and follower, Rasikananda, built a beautiful samadhi for his guru, which can be seen even today.

Shyamananda Prabhu’s puspa samadhi and the place where he found Shrimati Radharani’s ankle bracelet is just across the street from Shri Shri Radha-Syamsundara’s temple in Vrndavana. Shri Shri Radha-Syamsundara are his worshippable Deities.

Shrila Shyamananda Pandit ki jay!
