Śrī Snāna Yātrā





On the full moon day in the month of Jaistha, Śrī Puruşottama- Jagannātha 's Snāna Yātrā festival is performed. During this time, Śrī Jagannātha, Śrī Balabhadra, and Śrī Subhadrādevī are brought to the snana-vedi or bathing platform in a similar way as Pahāṇḍī Vijaya is done. There a grand bathing ceremony is performed on the three Deities and Sudarsana with 108 gold pitchers of water. 


After the bathing, the Lord accepts the form of Ganesa. It is said that in order to bathe Śrī Jagannātha with pärijit-scented celestial Ganges water, all the great sages and demigos carry that water on their heads and visit Sri Purusottama Delima, and under the leadership of Brahma, they bathe the Supreme Lord on the bathing platform and offer lavish prayers.


So that the demigods can freely sit and watch the Lord's grand bathing cer emony, the exalted devotee King Indradyumna would erect a canopy and other large curtains bedecked with emeralds around the bathing altar during the bathing ceremony. In due course of time, that bathing platform became very old, and King Anangabhimadeva constructed the present bathing altar.


On Snäna Yatra day, the bathing altar of Sri Jagannātha is decorated with various jewels, pearls, garlands, cumarus, flags, and sanctified by cool water mixed with fragrant sandalwood pulp and saturated with the aroma of fragrant incense. There after, the servants of Sri Jagannātha fetch water from the well located in the southern direction and after filling the golden pitchers with this water scented with fragrant objects and purified by pavamani mantras, perform the adhivasa ceremony in the temple according to the rules and regulations mentioned in the stras. Then after offering colorful powder, they prepare to take Lord Sri Jagannātha to the bathing arena along with Sri Balarama, Sri Subhadra, and Sri Sudarsana,


When the Deities are taken to the bathing arena, the servants who are duly appointed, recognized and regarded by the king, fan Them with camaras and fans made of palm leaves. Fearing that due to carelessness some fault may occur, the servants cover the entire body of the Deities with beautiful silk cloth as they take Them to the bathing platform. At that time, when they lift Sri Jagannātha, who is worshipable by the entire universe, the demigods in the heavenly planets think and consider like this. "Perhaps Sri Jagannātha wishes to come to the heavenly planet."


Thinking like this the demigods fix their eyes on the husband of Lakşmi and chant, "O Rāma! O Krsna! All glories to You! All glories to You!" In such a dra matic way, the Supreme Lord's abhiseka is performed on the bathing platform on His birthday in the month of Jaistha.


The Supreme Lord Jagannātha has said that in the second part consisting of the four yugas of Svayambhuva Manu's reign, and in the beginning of the first part of Satya-yuga, He appears simply by the influence of Svayambhuva Manu's sacrifice. He has descended on the full moon day in the month of Jaiştha. This is why that day is Sri Jagannātha 's auspicious birthday. According to His order, on that day after performing the adhiväsa, Sri Jagannātha 's bathing ceremony on the bathing altar is conducted with great pomp according to the scriptural rules and regulations for bathing.


The exalted devotee King Indradyumna used to celebrate Sri Jagannātha 's Appearance Day festival in this procedure on the full moon day in the month of Jaistha, Sri Jagannātha has said to King Indradyumna:


"There is an indestructible banyan tree on the sea shore. On the north of that, there is a well, the water of which is filled with the waters of all holy rivers, but at present it is covered with sand. First I had created the well so that I can take bath. and I have descended. Therefore you need to discover that well. First you should duly Satisfy the protector, Kşetrapäla and the Dikpälas, and then on the day of caturdasi, you have to renovate that well accompanied by blowing of conchshells. playing of drums and so on. The twiceborn will fetch pure water from that sancti fied well and with that water, Sri Jagannātha, Sri Balabhadra, and Subhadrädevi along with Brahma will be bathed in the morning on the full moon day in the month of Jaistha."


According to these direct instructions given by the Supreme Lord to King Indradyumna, even today Sri Snäna Yatra is performed at Purusottama in this way. After the bathing, Sri Jagannatha and Sri Balarama are dressed as Ganesa or in the elephant vesa.


It was the order of Sri Jagannātha to the great devotee King Indradyumna that after performing the grand bathing no one should see the Lord, who is without full paint and decoration, for fifteen days. As is stated in the Utkala Khanda Chapter 29, verse 29: tatah pañcadašāhāni snäpayitva tu mām nrpa acitram vă virūpam vā na paśyeta kadacana."


According to this order of Sri Jagannātha, the doors of the temple remain closed for fifteen days. Because the Lord cannot be seen during this period, it is called Anavasara Käla. During this time the Gaudiya Vaisnavas, who are under the shelter of vipralambha bhava or the mood of separation, go to see Sri Ālālanātha  following in the footsteps of Sri Guru and Gauränga.


For fifteen days the Lord resides in a room called Khatasesa grha or Nirodhana grha located next to Sri Jagamohana.


During Snāna Yatra, in order to expand the beauty of His human-like pastimes, Śrī Jagannathadeva manifests the pastime of suffering from fever after the bathing. Thinking that Sri Jagannathadeva is suffering from fever, the dayitapatis offer Him pacana or a sweet drink and during this period every day they offer sweets to Him. The bathing altar or platform of Sri Jagannathadeva is situated so high in the outer courtyard that from Badadanda or the main road of Puri, the pilgrims can see Śrī Jagannathadeva's Snäna Yatra and make their lives successful.


Nava Yauvana or Netrotsava


Every year after Snāna Yatrā, Śrī Jagannatha, Śrī Balabhadra and Śrī Subhadrādevī are repainted. This is called Śrī Angaraga. During Angaraga there is no darśana of Śrī Jagannathadeva for fifteen days. Thereafter when Jagannāthadeva manifests in a fresh form and gives darśana while decorated with various garments and ornaments, that festival is called Netrotsava or Nava Yauvana. The rules and regulations for the Deities Angaraga seva for a fortnight after Snāna Yātrā is described in the fifteenth chapter of Nīlādri Mahodaya.
