Nava-prameya-siddhanta (Nine Truths of Evidence )

Q. What command has the supremely worshipable Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu given to us?

A. His order is this: that we very carefully observe the nine instructions of truth that Shri Madhvacarya has given us through the guru-parampara (disciplic succession).

Q. Who forms the guru-parampara?

A. The adi-guru (original guru) of all the spiritual masters in the disciplic succession is Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Showing His great mercy, He gave instructions in the truth to Lord Brahma, the adi-kavi (original poet). These truths were in turn taught by Brahma to Shri Narada, by Narada to Vyasa, and successively from Vyasa to Shri Madhvacarya. Such instructions received through this disciplic succession are called Guru-Parampara-Upadesa.

Q. What are the names of these nine instructions given by Shri Madhvacarya?

A. Their names are thus:

1) Bhagavan alone is the Supreme truth, one without a second.

2) He is the object of knowledge in all the Vedas.

3) The universe is real [satya].

4) Differences [between Isvara, jiva and matter] are real.

5) Jiva souls are the servants of Lord Hari.

6) All souls are different according to their different situations.

7) Liberation [moksa] is the name of attainment of Bhagavan's feet.

8 Bhagavan's pure worship [amala bhajana] is the only way to attain liberation.

9) Pratyaksa [direct perception], anumana [logic], and sabda [spiritual sound] are the three types of evidence.

Lord Jagannath's Maha-prasada

Lord Jagannath's Maha-prasada

Pastime from Caitenya-mangala by Srila Lochan Dasa Thakura

Narada Muni once went to Vaikuntha and served Mother Laxmi very attentively. Sri Laxmi was very pleased and requested Narada Muni to ask for any boon. Narada Muni replied, "My dear Mother Laxmi, you must promise that whatever I ask for, you will grant." Laxmi Devi wowed that she would gladly fulfill his desire. The great saint revealed his wish: Narada Muni requested Laxmi Devi to give him the maha-prasada remnants of Lord Narayana.

Suddenly Laxmi Devi's mood changed and her face became clenched with worry. "Please ask me for anything else except for the Lord's prasada," she begged. "A few days ago the Lord instructed me not to give His prasada to anyone. You must understand that I cannot disobey my husband's order. My dear son, 1 cannot give you prasada" Narada was very adamant and reminded Devi of her promise. "You are the dear wife of Lord Narayana," Narada Muni said. "You must grant me this boon. Somehow or another you must give me the Lord's maha-prasada" Laxmi was now in great trouble. What to do? She told Narada Muni to wait and that she would look into what could be done to satisfy his desire. At noon Lamxi Devi lovingly served lunch to her husband, Lord Narayana. Even though Devi performed her duties with attention and expertise, still the Lord marked that his wife was very unhappy. Her face had become black and morose. Lord Narayana gently asked her the reason for her distress. Taking shelter at the Lords lotus feet, Laxmiji explained her predicament. Lord Narayana mercifully comforted His crying wife and said, "Just lor today I will cancel this restriction. You may take My plate of remnants and give it to Narada. But you must deliver the prasada in such a way that I do not see. When I turn my face to the side you may take the plate away as if I do not know." The goddess became joyful. Following her beloved husbands instruction, she deftly removed His plate of remnants when He was not looking.

Laxmiji immediately took the maha-prasada plate and happily presented it to Narada Muni. Narada Muni, dancing in ecstasy, eagerly honored the Lord's remnants. He relished Lord Nara-yana's prasada, and did not cease for second from chanting the Lord's holy name and dancing in great bliss. As his ecstatic emotions increased, he could not control himself. Narada Muni with his vina in tow started running all over the universe like a madman. Chanting and dancing without stopping, he ran from planet to planet. Finally he reached Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was surprised to see Narada Muni chanting and dancing in such a state of ecstasy. Narada Muni, swimming in the waves Vishnu-bhaka, did not notice Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva pacified Narada Muni. "Narada, I know you are always in ecstasy because you constantly chant the name of Lord Narayana. But I have never seen you in such a condition! What happened to you?" Then Narada Muni cooled down and explained everything. "I got so much pleasure and ecstasy after honoring the Lords maha-prasada that I can't stop dancing and chanting," Narada breathlessly exclaimed. Lord Shiva, folding his palms replied, "Oh Narada! You are so fortunate that you have tasted the mahaprasda of Lord Narayana." Lord Shiva smiled hopefully. "Dear Narada, have you brought any prasada for me?"

Narada felt very sorry for he had not brought any prasada to share with Lord Shiva. Putting his head down, Narada stood with folded hands before Lord Shiva. Then he saw that a morsel of prasada had stuck to his fingernail. Narada gasped, "Oh yes! Here is some prasada! Prasada kanika matra. A morsel of prasada just for you."

Narada Muni carefully held up his hand for Lord Shiva's inspection. "Oh Shiva. You are so fortunate. Please take this maha-prasada."Narada Muni put his finger into Shivaji's mouth. As soon as that small morsel of maha-prasada touched the tounge of Mahadeva, he felt great ecstasy and happiness, so much so that he could not remain quiet. Lord Shiva started to chant and dance. His dancing increased as his ecstasy intensified. His dancing became so vigorous that he manifested the Tandava, the dance indicating the time of annihilation. The whole universe started to shake. Everyone became frightened, thinking "What happened? Why is this dance is taking place untimely? It is not time for the annihilation."

No one was brave enough to stop Shivaji from dancing the annihilation dance. The devas begged Mother Parvati to pacify the lord, otherwise the whole universe would be destroyed. Mother Parvati arrived on the scene and saw Lord Shiva dancing in uncontrollable ecstasy. Mother Parvati humbly approached Lord Shiva, and when he came to his external senses, she inquired, "My dear husband! What happened to you? What has caused you to dance in such ecstasy?" Lord Shiva explained that he had received Lord Na-rayana's maha-prasada from Narada Muni. Parvati Devi became astonished. "My dear husband, have you kept any maha-prasada for me?" Lord Shiva could not answer. He had managed to get only one morsel of prasada from Narada. How could he have saved any?

Parvati was angry that she did not get maha-prasada. "I am de¬prived of Lord Narayanas prasada.''She was so furious that the fire of her anger started to burn the whole universe. From the lower planets to the higher planets, everyone felt the burning heat. The sages and saints understood that everything was going to be finished by the hot anger of Mother Parvati. No one could pacify her.

Finally all of the demigods headed by Lord Brahma rushed to Vaikuntha to inform Lord Vishnu. Hearing the situation, Lord Vishnu traveled to Kailash riding on the back of Garuda. As soon as Parvati Devi saw Lord Narayana, she came forward to offer her obeisances. Lord Narayana blessed his devotee and told her, "I will give you as much as maha-prasada you want. Please be pacified and give up your anger. Otherwise, all of your children will be fin¬ished." But Motiier Parvati protested. "I will not be satisfied if You give your maha-prasada only to me. I request You to give your maha-prasada to all of my children, to all of the living entities. I do not want to see any of my children suffer like I am suffering now due to being deprived of your mahaprasada. You must arrange something so that all living beings, including the dogs may honor Your maha-prasada"

Lord Narayana smiled and said " Tathastu. Let it be so. My dear Parvati, to fulfill your desire I will appear in Nilachala-dham. My temple will be famous for distributing My prasada. Whoever takes My prasada will be liberated. All of my prasada will be of¬fered to you first. Then only will the remnants become maha-prasada. This maha-prasada will be distributed to everyone without consideration. I will keep you next to Me. You will have your temple just behind Mine in the mner courtyard. Lord Shiva, because he neglected to give you maha-prasada, will stay at a distance. He will have his temple outside the courtyard."

The Lord appeared in Puri as Jagannath. Parvati Devi is there in the name of Vimala. All of Jagannath s prasada is offered first to Vimala Devi. Then only is it distributed as maha-prasada. In Puri there is no distinction between low and high-casts for taking Jagannath maha prasada. Jagannath maha-prasada is so pure that sastra says that a brahmana can take maha-prasada form the mouth of a dog. It can never be contaminated.

Deva Sayana Ekadasi

Deva Sayana Ekadasi is also referred as – Padma Ekadasi, Vishnu Sayana Ekadasi, Sesha Sayana Ekadasi.

Significance of Deva Sayana Ekadasi:

· The importance of Deva Sayana Ekadasi was mentioned in Bhavishyottara Purana. Yudhisthira, asked about the significance of observing a fast on Sayana Ekadasi.

· Lord Shri Krishna explained the glory of Sayana Ekadasi Vrata which was told earlier by Lord Brahma to His Son – Sage Narada.

·Story related to Deva Sayana Ekadasi:

The saintly king Yudhishthira Maharaj said, “Oh Keshava, what is the name of that Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Ashadha (June - July) Who is the worshipable Deity for the auspicious day, and what is the process for observing this event?”

·  Lord Sri Krishna replied, I shall gladly tell you a wonderful historical event that the deva lord Brahma once narrated to his son Narada Muni. One day Narada Muni asked his father, ‘What is the name of the Ekadasi that comes during the light part of the month of Ashadha’, much as you did? ‘Kindly tell me how I should observe this Ekadasi and thus please the Supreme Lord, Sri Vishnu.’

· Lord Brahma replied, ‘Oh great saintly orator, O best of all sages, Oh purest devotee of Lord Vishnu, and your question is as usual excellent for all mankind. There is nothing better than Ekadasi, the day of Lord Sri Hari, in this or any other world. It nullifies even the worst sins if observed properly. For this reason I shall tell you about this Ashadha-shukla Ekadasi.

· Fasting on this Ekadasi purifies one of all sins and fulfills all ones desires. Therefore, whoever neglects to observe this sacred fast day is a good candidate for entering into hell.

·  Ashadha-shukla Ekadasi is also famous as Padma Ekadasi. Just to please the Supreme Lord Hrishikesha, the master of the senses, one should fast on this day.

·  Listen carefully, Oh Narada, as I relate to you a wonderful historical event that was recorded in the scriptures regarding this Ekadasi. Just hearing this account destroys all kinds of sins, along with all obstacles on the path to spiritual perfection.·  Oh son, there was once a saintly king in the Surya Vamsha (Sun dynasty) whose name was Mandhata. Because he always stood up for the truth, he was appointed emperor.  He took care of his subjects as though they were his very own family members and children. On account of his piety and great religiosity, there was no pestilence, drought, or disease of any kind in his entire kingdom. All his subjects were not only free of all kinds of disturbances but also were very wealthy. The king’s own treasury was free of any ill-gotten moneys, and thus he ruled happily for many years.  Once, however, because of some sin in his kingdom, there was a drought for three years. The subjects found themselves beset by famine also. The lack of food grains made it impossible for them to perform the prescribed Vedic sacrifices, offer oblations of grita (ghee) to their forefathers and to the devas, engage in any ritualistic worship, or even study the Vedic literatures. Finally, they all came before their beloved king in a great assembly and addressed him thus, ‘Oh king, you always see to our welfare, so we humbly beg your assistance now. Everyone and everything in this world needs water. Without water, almost everything is rendered useless or dead. The Vedas call water nara, and because the Supreme Personality of Godhead sleeps upon water, His another name is Narayana. God makes His own abode on water and takes His rest there. In His form as the clouds, the Supreme Lord is present throughout the sky and pours forth rains, from which grow the grains that maintain every living entity.

·  Oh king, the severe drought has caused a great lack of valuable grains; thus we are all miserable, and the population is decreasing as people die off or leave your kingdom. Oh best ruler on Earth, please find some solutions to this problem and bring us to peace and prosperity once again.”

· The king replied, “You speak the truth, for grains are like Brahman, the Absolute Truth, who lives within grains and thereby sustains all beings. Indeed, it is because of grains that the entire world lives. Now, why is there a terrible drought in our kingdom? The Holy Scriptures discuss this subject very thoroughly. If a king (or head of the country) is irreligious, both he and his subjects suffer. I have meditated upon the cause of our problem for a long time, but after searching my past and present character I can honestly say that I find no sin. Still, for the good of all your subjects, I shall try to remedy the situation.”

·  King Mandhata Thinking in this way, assembled his army and entourage. paid his obeisance’s to me, and then entered the forest. He wandered here and there, seeking great sages in their ashrams and inquiring about how to resolve the crisis in his kingdom. at last he came upon the ashram of one of my other sons, Angira Muni, whose effulgence lit up all directions. Seated in his hermitage, Angira looked like a second Brahma. King Mandhata was very pleased to see that exalted sages, whose senses were completely under control.

·  The king immediately dismounted his horse and offered his respectful obeisance’s at the lotus feet of Angirasa Muni.

·  Then the king joined his palms and prayed for the Muni’s blessings. That saintly person reciprocated by blessing the king with sacred mantras; then he asked him about the welfare of the seven limbs of his kingdom. The seven limbs of a king’s domain are the king himself; the ministers; his treasury; his military forces; his allies; the brahmins; the sacrificial performances performed in the kingdom and the needs of the subjects under his care. After telling the sage how the seven limbs of his kingdom were situated, King Mandhata asked the sage about his own situation, and if he was happy. Then Angira Muni asked the king why he had undertaken such a difficult journey into the forest, and the king told him of the affliction his kingdom was suffering. The king said, “Oh great sage, I am ruling and maintaining my kingdom while following the Vedic injunctions, and thus I do not know the reason for the drought. To solve this mystery, I have approached you for help. Please help me relieve the suffering of my subjects.”

·  Angira Rishi said the king, ‘The present age, Satya yuga, is the best of all ages, for in this age Dharma stands on all four legs (Truthfulness, Austerity, Mercy, and Cleanliness). In this age everyone respects Brahmins as the topmost members of society, Also, everyone fulfills his occupational duties, and only twice-born Brahmins are allowed to perform Vedic austerities and penances. although this is a standard, Oh lion among kings, there is one shudra (uninitiated, untrained person) who is thus unlawfully performing the rites of austerity and penance in your kingdom. This is why there is no rain in your land. you should therefore punish this labourer with death, for by so doing you will remove the contamination inflicted by his actions and restore peace to your [kingdom].

·The king then replied, “How can I kill an offense less performer of austerity and sacrifice? Please give me some spiritual solution.”

·  The great sage Angira Muni then said, “Oh king, you should observe a fast on the Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Ashadha. This auspicious day is named Padma Ekadasi, and by its influence plentiful rains and thus grains and other foodstuffs will surely return to your kingdom. This Ekadasi bestows perfection upon its faithful observers, removes all kinds of bad elements, and destroys all obstacles on the path to perfection. Oh king, you, your relatives, and your subjects should all observe this sacred Ekadasi fast. Then everything in your kingdom will undoubtedly return to normal.”Upon hearing these words, the king offered his obeisance’s and then returned to his palace. When the Padma Ekadasi arrived, King Mandhata assembled all the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and shudras in his kingdom and instructed them to strictly observe this important fast day. After they had observed it, the rains fell, just as the sage had predicted, and in due course of time there were abundant crops and a rich harvest of grain. By the mercy of the Supreme Lord Hrishikesha, the master of the senses, all the subjects of King Mandhata became extremely happy and prosperous. Therefore, Oh Narada, everyone should observe this Ekadasi fast very strictly, for it bestows all kinds of happiness, as well as ultimate liberation, upon the faithful devotee’

· Lord Sri Krishna concluded, “My dear Yudhishthira, Padma Ekadasi is so powerful that one who simply reads or hears its glories becomes completely sinless. Oh Pandava, one who wishes to please Me should strictly observe this Ekadasi, which is also known as Deva-sayani Ekadasi

·  Deva-sayana, or Vishnu-sayana, indicates the day when Lord Vishnu goes to sleep with all the devas (demigods). It is said that after this day one should not perform any new auspicious ceremonies until Devotthani Ekadasi (Haribodhini (Probodhini) Devotthaani (Uttana) Ekadasi), which occurs during the month of Kartika (October - November), because the devas (demigods), being asleep, cannot be invited to the sacrificial arena and because the Sun is traveling along its Southern course (Dakshinayanam).

· Lord Sri Krishna continued, “Oh lion among kings, Yudhishthira Maharaj, whoever wants liberation should regularly observe a fast on this Ekadasi which is also the day when the Chaturmasya fast begins,  Since Shree Maha Vishnu rests on a Seven Hooded Cobra called Adi Sesha. So, this Ekasadasi is also referred as Sesha-Sayana-Ekadasi.  It is said that Shree Maha Vishnu goes to sleep for four months; The symbolism of four months is Chaturvidha Purushardhas – Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.

The observance of  Sayana Ekadasi is exclusively to get complete grace of Lord Vishnu  without  keeping wish-list in mind. By doing so, one will get rid of sins committed unknowingly
