Lord Shiva

Who is lord Siva?

He is the greatest of all devotees. Vaisnavanam yatha sambhuh: Sambhu, or Lord Siva, is the ideal Vaisnava. He constantly meditates upon Lord Rama and chants Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Lord Siva has a Visnu-Svami-sampradaya, which is called the Visnu Svami-sampradaya.

(SB 3.23.1p)

All devotees are dear to lord Siva

Lord Siva continued: Any person who is surrendered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, the controller of everything — material nature as well as the living entity — is actually very dear to me.

(SB 4.24.28)

You are all devotees of the Lord, and as such I appreciate that you are as respectable as the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. I know in this way that the devotees also respect me and that I am dear to them. Thus no one can be as dear to the devotees as I am.

It is said, vaisnavanam yatha sambhuh: Lord Siva is the best of all devotees. Therefore all devotees of Lord Krsna are also devotees of Lord Siva. In Vrndavana there is Lord Siva’s temple called Gopisvara. The gopis used to worship not only Lord Siva but Katyayani, or Durga, as well, but their aim was to attain the favor of Lord Krishna. A devotee of Lord Krsna does not disrespect Lord Siva, but worships Lord Siva as the most exalted devotee of Lord Krsna. Consequently whenever a devotee worships Lord Siva, he prays to Lord Siva to achieve the favor of Krishna, and he does not request material profit.

Because Lord Siva is a great devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he loves all the devotees of the Supreme Lord. Lord Siva told the Pracetas that because they were devotees of the Lord, he loved them very much. Lord Siva was not kind and merciful only to the Pracetas; anyone who is a devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is very dear to Lord Siva. Not only are the devotees dear to Lord Siva, but he respects them as much as he respects the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Similarly, devotees of the Supreme Lord also worship Lord Siva as the most dear devotee of Lord Krsna. They do not worship him as a separate Personality of Godhead. It is stated in the list of nama-aparadhas that it is an offense to think that the chanting of the name of Hari and the chanting of Hara, or Siva, are the same. The devotees must always know that Lord Visnu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and that Lord Siva is His devotee.

A devotee should be offered respect on the level of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and sometimes even more respect. Indeed, Lord Rama, the Personality of Godhead Himself, sometimes worshiped Lord Siva. If a devotee is worshiped by the Lord, why should a devotee not be worshiped by other devotees on the same level with the Lord? This is the conclusion. From this verse it appears that Lord Siva blesses the asuras simply for the sake of formality. Actually he loves one who is devoted to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

(SB 4.24.30+p)

Maha Sivaratri

Siva + ratri, ratri means night, so Sivaratri means the night of lord Siva.

Maha Sivaratri comes in the month of Phalgun (February-March). This ceremony is observed in the honor of lord Siva, who was married to mother Parvati ( or Durga) on this day, it culminates in the night.

Vaishnavas  pray lord Shiva on this day in order to receive his blessings to become attached to Lord Krishna.

Lord Siva tells mother Parvati as below in Padma Purana-

ārādhanānāṁ sarveṣāṁ viṣṇor ārādhanaṁ param

tasmāt parataraṁ devi tadīyānāṁ samarcanam

“O Devī, the most exalted system of worship is the worship of Lord Viṣṇu. Greater than that is the worship of tadīya, or anything belonging to Viṣṇu.” Śrī Viṣṇu is sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha [Bs. 5.1]. Similarly, the most confidential servant of Kṛṣṇa, the spiritual master, and all devotees of Viṣṇu are tadīya. The sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha, guru, Vaiṣṇavas and things used by them must be considered tadīya and without a doubt worshipable by all living beings.

(CC Madhya 12.38p)

How can we please lord Siva on Maha Sivaratri?

By serving Krishna and His devotees, and by chanting extra rounds of Hare Krishna mahā-mantra on Maha Sivaratri.

But another very beautiful way to please lord Siva on Maha Sivaratri is by reciting the prayers lord Siva himself sings in glorification of Krishna in Srimad Bhagavatam, also known as Rudra Gita (song of lord Siva). As per lord Siva this  is the best prayer for anyone aspiring for the lotus feet of Krishna.

Now I shall chant one mantra which is not only transcendental, pure and auspicious, but is the best prayer for anyone who is aspiring to attain the ultimate goal of life. When I chant this mantra, please hear it carefully and attentively.

(SB 4.24.31)

There are great benedictions given for those fortunate devotees who will faithfully recite these very sweet verses by lord Siva.

A devotee of Lord Krishna whose mind is always absorbed in Him, who with great attention and reverence chants this stotra [prayer], will achieve the greatest perfection of life without delay.

Although rendering devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead and worshiping Him are very difficult, if one vibrates or simply reads this stotra [prayer] composed and sung by me, he will very easily be able to invoke the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the dearmost objective of all auspicious benedictions. A human being who sings this song sung by me can please the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Such a devotee, being fixed in the Lord’s devotional service, can acquire whatever he wants from the Supreme Lord.

 (SB 4.24.74,76,77)

By investing few thoughtful and attentive moments to recite these verse we can easily please lord Siva on maha Sivaratri and get his blessings. Below is the link from where we can read these prayers, they are from verses 33 to verse 68. ( SB 4.24.33-68)

Rectifying Devotees Rather Than Rejecting Them!

Prabhupada: Now if they do not also obey the orders of the sannyasi, then naturally... But that thing should be brought to the notice of higher, or some official, president. Then steps should be taken, that "If you cannot follow the rules and regulations, then you must leave." It is plain thing. There is no question of fighting. First thing is that a sannyasi, leader, they should behave themselves according to the rules and regulations, and then ask others to follow. The others who do not follow, once, twice excused; three times, "Please leave." Like that.

Syamasundara: If, if he follows strictly the principles, then he'll be automatically respected.

Acyutananda: Now I wanted to ask somebody to leave, but how does he leave? We have to buy him his ticket or something. There was a boy, one...

Prabhupada: Leave means he can go to other center.

Acyutananda: I wanted to ask him to leave, but where would he go? Who will pay for his way out?

Prabhupada: Then one thing is, that this ultimate, we are canvassing, we are preaching to bring men. To get them out is not our business. That is not our business that, but if he is incorrigible, he is not..., then he must leave. That is... If you are making so much preaching, why, to bring men, not to ask them to go. If for some paltry reason you ask, that is not...

Devotee: This was not a paltry reason.

Prabhupada: When he is incorrigible. First of all you have to try to correct him and... That is preaching. Our preaching means that people are useless; we have to train them in such a way they may take to Krsna consciousness. That is our management. But if he is completely incorrigible, then he will be asked to leave. Otherwise it is not our business that as soon as we see something is being wrong... He must be trained, by our example, by our teaching, by our work. Santa yam cinvanti kutih[?]. By word, by example, he should be corrected. If I cannot correct him by my words and example, that is also my [indistinct]. Because they are..., they are..., you cannot expect that everyone has come here, sadhu. It is not that. We collect from ordinary men, but we have to make him sadhu. That is preaching. That is preaching. That you have to do tactfully. Not that because one is incorrigible... After trying all our ways, if he is still incorrigible, then you can ask. Not that for paltry reason he cannot be..., "Get out.'' That "get out,'' if you make, then everything has to be "get out.'' That is not the policy. Policy is first of all to correct him. That is preaching. As far as possible by example, by teaching, by everything.

Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami

Gopal Bhatta Goswami was one of the six goswamis of Vrindavan, who were dear associates of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and were residing in Vraja to fulfill his desire of manifesting the holy pastime places of Shyamsundar and writing transcendental literatures on the sublime topics of Bhakti. The son of Vyenkata Bhatta and the nephew of Srila Prabhodananda Saraswati, the author of the masterpiece Sri Vrindavan Mahimamrita, Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami stayed with his parents, who were great devotees of the Sri Sampradaya, and served them till they stayed on this planet earth, in accordance with the instructions of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

After the departure of his parents, Gopal Bhatta went to Sri Vrindavan Dham and stayed there in the association of Srila Rupa and Sanatan Goswami. Before going to Vrindavan, he went to the Gandaki river and there eleven Shilas came into his bathing pot while he was taking a dip in the sacred river. Not certain of whether he should take them along with him or not, he put them back in the river. However, when the same Shillas came twice more in his lota, he understood it to be the desire of the Lord that he should worship them, and therefore he took them with him and continued worshiping them while residing under various trees in Vrindavan.

Once, when a wealthy devotee came to Vraja and was offering various beautiful clothes and jewelry for the deities of the different Goswamis and also gave him beautiful ornaments and dresses, Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami lamented not being able to beautifully decorate the three-fold bending gorgeous form of the Lord, as his worshipable Shillas were all round and did not show the divine bodily features of the Lord. Thinking in this way he went to sleep, and to his utter surprise, in the morning, one of the Shillas had transformed into a deity of Tribhang lalita Shyamsundar. Being the combined form of Sri Madanmohan, Sri Govinda and Sri Gopinath, with his tapering thighs and lotus feet resembling those of Madanmohan, his slender waist and broad chest appearing just like that of Govinda, and his lotus face, oozing nectar, was as splendid as that of Sri Gopinath, Radha Raman was exceedingly beautiful and captivating. Seeing the spellbinding form of the Lord, Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami was overwhelmed with transcendental ecstasy and along with the other goswamis, he performed a grand appearance festival of Sri Radha Raman, after which he decorated his divine form with the ornaments and clothes that he had received. Indeed, Sri Radha Raman had appeared in this most enchanting form just for the pleasure of Gopal Bhatta Goswami, as the desire of his pure devotee is surely fulfilled by the Lord.

Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami authored the Vaishnava Samskara book named Sri Satkriya Sar Deepika and also assisted Srila Sanatan Goswami with Sri Hari Bhakti Vilas. After having stayed in Sri Vrindavan Dham for the rest of his present lilas in this material world, he entered the eternal pastimes of Sri Sri Radha Raman in the nikunjas of Sridham Vrindvan, where he served them as Sri Guna Manjari. Some Vaishnavas including Srila Kavi Karnapura, the author of Sri Gaur Ganadesh Deepike, are of the opinion that Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami is Sri Ananga Manjari in Krishna Lila, and therefore he can be understood to be both Sri Guna Manjari and Sri Ananga Manjari. It was on the Panchami tithi in the Krishna Paksha of Ashadha Maas, that Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami brought his manifest pastimes in this world to a close and entered Samadhi. His Samadhi mandir is present next to the Temple of Sri Radha Raman, where one can go to take his darshan and receive his blessings for advancement in Spiritual life.

The Scorpion and the Saint

Once, a sadhu was travelling through a simple village. He spent his time chanting the names of God and thanking the Lord for everything. Along the way he came across a well and decided to drink some water.

When the sadhu bent over the well, he noticed that a scorpion had fallen in. "I must help the scorpion otherwise it will drown," thought the kind sadhu. He scooped a little palmful of water and tried to lift the scorpion onto his hand. But the scorpion stung him with his jaws and fell back again into the water. The sadhu rubbed his hand to ease the pain. Then, once again he bent over the well. He put his hand in to scoop the water and lift the scorpion out.

He tried again and again to rescue the scorpion. But the scorpion stung him each time. Each time the sadhu's hand jerked with the pain. His hand was bleeding and swollen, yet he tried again and again to save the life of the scorpion.

A man stood nearby watching. He was stunned to see all that was happening. "This ungrateful scorpion keeps on biting you and you keep on saving it. Why don't you just let it drown?" he questioned.

The kind sadhu simply smiled with mercy. "The scorpion's nature is to bite," he replied, "It cannot give up its nature. My nature is to save. I too cannot change my nature". Saying so eventually the sadhu saved the scorpion out of the water.

By developing qualities of tolerance and forgiveness we can serve others.

A Challenge for Bhima

During their exile, the Pandavas travelled from one holy place to another They happened  to come to Badrikashram in the Himalayan Mountains

One day, as Draupadi was admiring the natural beauty of the place a strong wind brought a fragrant, thousand petalled lotus into her lap. She had never seen such a beautiful flower before. She approached Bhima and requested him to get more of such flowers because she wanted to present them to Yudhisthira To please Draupadi Bhima immediately set out in the direction of the fragrance.

Suddenly Bhima heard a loud pounding noise Bhima turned in that direction On the way he saw a huge mankey lying in his path. The monkey was thrashing his tail on the ground and creating a tremendous naise

Bhima was impatient. And anger was rising within him. He asked the monkey to move out of his way

The old monkey responded," am too old to move and if you are so keen to go on then jump over me."

Frustrated, Bhima said, " I cannot be disrespectful to an elderly person like you ! cannot jump over you, because God resides in your heart Otherwise I would have jumped over you as the great Hanuman did when he leapt over the ocean"

The monkey enquired, "Who is this Hanuman for whom you have so much respect? Tell me about him"

Bhima was surprised, "You are a monkey and you don't know Hanuman? He is the greatest of all monkeys and the son of Vayu, the wind god. Hence, he is my respectful elder brother. He is famous for his devotion to Lord Rama. It is he who jumped across the ocean to Lanka and performed many heroic acts".

Bhima then added with a tinge of pride, "I too, am no less in strength and prowess."

Hearing this, the monkey calmly repeated, "Please believe me when I say that I am too old to move. If my tail is obstructing your way just move it aside and go your way."

Bhima confidently approached the monkey's tail and tried to lift it with his left hand as if he was picking up just a small twig of a tree.

To his utter dismay, he could not budge the monkey's tail. Bhima angrily tried to lift the tail with both his hands then. And he failed again. Bhima's eyes rolled and his body perspired.

Bhima folded his hands, "Forgive me O great monkey. Forgive me for my pride. Kindly reveal yourself."

The monkey, with a beautiful smile, told Bhima, "I am Hanuman, the son of Vayu! Bhima was dazed. "Oh...my dear brother" he said and bowed down to fall at Hanuman's feet.

Then both the brothers embraced each other. Tears of joy trickled down their eyes. Bhima was thrilled to meet his brother.

Hanuman then promised Bhima that he would reside on the flag of Arjuna's chariot. "And," predicted Hanuman,"My thunderous roar will strike fear in the enemy's side during the Kurukshetra war."

Bhima realized Hanuman had taught him a lesson in humility.

Whatever strengths and abilities we have, are gifts of the Lord. They can be taken away at any time. Therefore, we should always remain humble and never become proud.

Maharshi Charak

Maharshi charak is known as the Father of Ayurveda. He wrote a famous treatise called the Charak Samhita, which talks about the fine qualities that one should develop while practicing Ayurveda. He was renowned for his knowledge of Vedic scriptures as well as his expertise natural medicinal cures. People from far and wide came to study under him.

One day he was travelling along with his disciples through dense forests, farms and beautiful hills and valleys in search of medicinal herbs.

On their way, they came across a farm. Maharshi Charak's eyes fell on a beautiful flower. He stood admiring the shape of the petals, the attractive color and the sweet mild fragrance. He knew this flower was usually very difficult to find. This rare flower could be used for making some special medicines. However, because of his high moral values, he did not pluck it. He simply stood, looking at the wondrous gift of nature.

One disciple wanted to please his guru. He politely asked, "Guruji, if you grant me permission, shall I offer this flower at your service?"

Maharshi Charak replied, "My dear boy, I certainly want this beautiful flower, but if I pluck it without the permission of the owner of the farm, it will amount to robbery."

"But guruji", the disciple stammered, "it's only a flower!"

"No my son", Maharshi Charak replied, "It may seem to be a tiny insignificant flower, but God has placed it under somebody's care."

Saying this, Maharshi started walking towards the farm owner's house, which was three miles away from the farm. After seeking the owner's permission, Maharshi Charak returned to the farm and plucked the beautiful flower he wanted.

The disciples' faith in their guru deepened even more on seeing Maharishi Charak's honesty. They realized it was these high spiritual values and principles that made their guru's diagnosis and medicines so powerful and effective.

If we respect God, then we must also respect His children. Respect means not encroaching on what God has allotted to others and not hurting others. If everyone practices this virtue, this world would be a better and a happier place.
