Childhood Pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

Resting on a Snake’s back

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

One day while Nimai was crawling upon His knees, a snake slithered through the courtyard. The Lord caught hold of it, simply to enact another pastime. The snake then coiled and the Lord lied down on the snake’s back. When the residents of the house saw Him they screamed, but the Lord calmly smiled and remained upon the snake looking very relaxed. The people shouted while Nimai’s parents waited in anxiety. The snake, who was actually, Lord Ananta Sesha (the resting couch of Lord Narayana), started to slither away when He heard all the crying and commotion. Little Nimai tried to stop Him but the ladies rushed over and gathered up Nimai into their arms. Some relatives tied a talisman upon Nimai for his protection, while some chanted benefice mantras and others poured Ganga water on different parts of His body. Some of them thought that the child had received a new life, while others realized that the snake was actually Ananta Sesha.

Alexander the Great and the thief

Alexander the Great and the thief

Lecture on SB 1.16.17 -- Los Angeles, January 12, 1974:

You know the story of Alexander the Great and the thief. Alexander the Great arrested one thief, and he was going to punish him. The thief pleaded, "Sir, you are going to punish me, but what is the difference between you and me? I am a small thief, you are a great thief. That's all. (laughter) You are by force occupying other's kingdom, and you have no right. But because you are strong, or some way or other, you have got the opportunity, and you are conquering country after country, country after... So I am also doing the same thing. So what is the difference between you and me?" So Alexander considered that "Yes, I am nothing but a big thief, that's all." So he released him, "Yes, I am no better than you."

Again become a mouse. ( Punar mūṣiko bhava)

Again become a mouse. ( Punar mūṣiko bhava)

Nrsimha-caturdasi Lord Nrsimhadeva's Appearance Day -- Srimad-Bhagavatam 7.5.22-34 -- Los Angeles, May 27, 1972:

***************************************************

Darkest region means that we are going to become animals next life. Because this is animalistic civilization. Nature gave us the opportunity to realize God, but God-realization is meant for human being. The human being, if he does not realize God, he's simply engaged in animalistic way of life—eating, sleeping, mating—then nature will call, "All right, sir, again become animal." Punar mūṣiko bhava: "Again become a mouse." You know this story? Punar mūṣiko bhava. There is a story. There is a very nice story. One rat, mouse, he came to a saintly person. Everyone comes to saintly person for some blessing, you see. Real blessing they don't want. Some material blessing. Real blessing, Kṛṣṇa, they don't want. If you give him some blessing that "You become very rich man and..." These... they'll be very much pleased. are all very well, this. So this mouse also came and begged the saintly person, "Sir, I am in difficulty. If you give me some blessing?"

"What is that?"

"The cat chases after me always. I'm very unhappy."

"So what do you want?"

"Now, if you make me a cat, then I can get relief from this."

"All right, you become cat." So he became cat.

So after few days, again he comes. "Sir, again I am in trouble."

"What is that?"

"The dog is chasing me." (laughter) Don't laugh, hear seriously. "Dog is chasing me."

"All right, then, what do you want?"

"Now, make me a tiger."

"All right, you become a tiger."

So when he became a tiger he was staring on the saintly person like this.

So he asked, "Why you are staring upon me? You want to eat me?"

"Yes."

So he again curses, punar mūṣiko bhava: "Again you become mouse. Again you become mouse."

So that is our position. We are advanced in civilization. Now we want to kill God. So we are again going to be uncivilized, to remain in the forest and to remain naked. Actually, they are practicing that: nature's life. So again they are going to be aborigines. And that is being practiced. They are going to the forest, they remain naked. So actually, punar mūṣiko bhava: "Again become mouse."

Gaura Purnima,

Gaura Purnima, the Holy Appearance Day of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.  Devotees of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) will be celebrating this festival all over the world, especially at ISKCON Mayapur, near the Lord’s birth-place.

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is known as the ‘channa avatara’ or ‘hidden incarnation’ of the Lord.  He appears in this world to experience the sweet love of  Radha for Krishna.  As Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Supreme Lord appears in the mood of His devotee – not in the mood of the Supreme Enjoyer, Krishna.  His eternal associates like Rupa and Sanatana Goswamis, however, understood His secret identity.

Here are Sanatana Goswami’s prayers to the Lord on first meeting Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at Dasasvamheda Ghata in Prayaga, India.  The first of these prayers is often recited when devotees perform worship, initiation ceremonies and food offerings to the Lord.  The second is not as well known, but equally important.  Lord Chaitanya is also known as ‘karuna avatara’ or the ‘avatara of compassion’:

namo maha-vadanyaya/krsna-prema-pradyate/

krsnaya krsna-caitanya-/namne guara-tvise namah

‘O most munificent incarnation!  You are Krsna Himself appearing as Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu.  You have assumed the golden colour of Srimati Radharani, and You are widely distributing pure love of Krsna.  We offer our respectful obeisances unto  You.’

This is Sanatana Goswami’s next verse:

yo jnanam-mattam bhuvanam dayalur/

ullaghayann apy akarot pramattam /

svaprema-sampat-sudayadbhuteham /

sri-krsna-caitanyam amum prapadye

‘Let me surrender unto the lotus feet of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is the most merciful Personality Of Godhead.  He delivers those souls who are merged in ignorance and offers them the highest gift, love of Krsna, and thus makes them mad after Krsna consciousness’  [Sri Rupa Goswami, Govinda Lilamrita 1.1-2]

Here is another beautiful verse from Sanatana Goswami:

na prema sravanadi-bhaktir api va yogo thava vaisnavo

/jnanam va subha-karma va kiyad aho saj-jatir api astiva /

hin arthadhika-sadhake tvayi tathapy acchedya-mula sati /

he gopijanavallabha vyathayate ha ha madasaiva mam

‘I am poor in love of Godhead, and I have no asset for hearing about devotional service.  Nor do I have any understanding of the science of devotional service, nor any cultivation of knowledge, nor any righteous activities to my credit.  I am not even born in a high family.  Nonetheless, O darling of the damsels of Vraja, I still maintain hopes of achieving You, and these hopes are always disturbing me’

‘Such a devotee, being touched deeply by such strong desires, always chants Hare Krsna Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare’ [Teachings Of Lord Caitanya, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, p.139]

Lord Jagannath’s Maha-prasada

Narada Muni once went to Vaikuntha and served Mother Laxmi very attentively. Sri Laxmi was very pleased and requested Narada Muni to ask for any boon. Narada Muni replied, “My dear Mother Laxmi, you must promise that whatever I ask for, you will grant.” Laxmi Devi wowed that she would gladly fulfill his desire. The great saint revealed his wish: Narada Muni requested Laxmi Devi to give him the maha-prasada remnants of Lord Narayana.

Suddenly Laxmi Devi’s mood changed and her face became clenched with worry. “Please ask me for anything else except for the Lord’s prasada,” she begged. “A few days ago the Lord in¬structed me not to give His prasada to anyone. You must under¬stand that I cannot disobey my husband’s order. My dear son, 1 cannot give you prasada” Narada was very adamant and reminded Devi of her promise. “You are the dear wife of Lord Narayana,” Narada Muni said. “You must grant me this boon. Somehow or another you must give me the Lord’s maha-prasada” Laxmi was now in great trouble. What to do? She told Narada Muni to wait and that she would look into what could be done to satisfy his desire. At noon Lamxi Devi lovingly served lunch to her husband, Lord Narayana. Even though Devi performed her duties with at¬tention and expertise, still the Lord marked that his wife was very unhappy. Her face had become black and morose. Lord Narayana gently asked her the reason for her distress. Taking shelter at the Lords lotus feet, Laxmiji explained her predicament. Lord Nara¬yana mercifully comforted His crying wife and said, “Just lor today I will cancel this restriction. You may take My plate of remnants and give it to Narada. But you must deliver the prasada in such a way that I do not see. When I turn my face to the side you may take the plate away as if I do not know.” The goddess became joy¬ful. Following her beloved husbands instruction, she deftly re¬moved His plate of remnants when He was not looking.

Laxmiji immediately took the maha-prasada plate and hap¬pily presented it to Narada Muni. Narada Muni, dancing in ecstasy, eagerly honored the Lord’s remnants. He relished Lord Nara-yana’s prasada, and did not cease for second from chanting the Lord’s holy name and dancing in great bliss. As his ecstatic emotions increased, he could not control himself. Narada Muni with his vina in tow started running all over the universe like a madman. Chanting and dancing without stopping, he ran from planet to planet. Finally he reached Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was surprised to see Narada Muni chanting and danc¬ing in such a state of ecstasy. Narada Muni, swimming in the waves Vishnu-bhaka, did not notice Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva pacified Na¬rada Muni. “Narada, I know you are always in ecstasy because you constantly chant the name of Lord Narayana. But I have never seen you in such a condition! What happened to you?” Then Narada Muni cooled down and explained everything. “I got so much pleas¬ure and ecstasy after honoring the Lords maha-prasada that I can’t stop dancing and chanting,” Narada breathlessly exclaimed. Lord Shiva, folding his palms replied, “Oh Narada! You are so fortunate that you have tasted the mahaprasda of Lord Narayana.” Lord Shiva smiled hopefully. “Dear Narada, have you brought any prasada for me?”

Narada felt very sorry for he had not brought any prasada to share with Lord Shiva. Putting his head down, Narada stood with folded hands before Lord Shiva. Then he saw that a morsel of prasada had stuck to his fingernail. Narada gasped, “Oh yes! Here is some prasada! Prasada kanika matra. A morsel of prasada just for you.”

Narada Muni carefully held up his hand for Lord Shiva’s inspection. “Oh Shiva. You are so fortunate. Please take this maha-prasada.”Narada Muni put his finger into Shivaji’s mouth. As soon as that small morsel of maha-prasada touched the tounge of Ma-hadeva, he felt great ecstasy and happiness, so much so that he could not remain quiet. Lord Shiva started to chant and dance. His dancing increased as his ecstasy intensified. His dancing became so vigorous that he manifested the Tandava, the dance indicating the time of annihilation. The whole universe started to shake. Everyone became frightened, thinking “What happened? Why is this dance is taking place untimely? It is not time for the annihilation.”

No one was brave enough to stop Shivaji from dancing the annihilation dance. The devas begged Mother Parvati to pacify the lord, otherwise the whole universe would be destroyed. Mother Parvati arrived on the scene and saw Lord Shiva dancing in uncon¬trollable ecstasy. Mother Parvati humbly approached Lord Shiva, and when he came to his external senses, she inquired, “My dear husband! What happened to you? What has caused you to dance in such ecstasy?” Lord Shiva explained that he had received Lord Na-rayana’s maha-prasada from Narada Muni. Parvati Devi became astonished. “My dear husband, have you kept any maha-prasada for me?” Lord Shiva could not answer. He had managed to get only one morsel of prasada from Narada. How could he have saved any?

Parvati was angry that she did not get maha-prasada. “I am de¬prived of Lord Narayanas prasada.”She was so furious that the fire of her anger started to burn the whole universe. From the lower planets to the higher planets, everyone felt the burning heat. The sages and saints understood that everything was going to be fin¬ished by the hot anger of Mother Parvati. No one could pacify her.

Finally all of the demigods headed by Lord Brahma rushed to Vaikuntha to inform Lord Vishnu. Hearing the situation, Lord Vishnu traveled to Kailash riding on the back of Garuda. As soon as Parvati Devi saw Lord Narayana, she came forward to offer her obeisances. Lord Narayana blessed his devotee and told her, “I will give you as much as maha-prasada you want. Please be pacified and give up your anger. Otherwise, all of your children will be fin¬ished.” But Motiier Parvati protested. “I will not be satisfied if You give your maha-prasada only to me. I request You to give your maha-prasada to all of my children, to all of the living entities. I do not want to see any of my children suffer like I am suffering now due to being deprived of your maha-prasada. You must arrange something so that all living beings, including the dogs may honor Your maha-prasada”

Lord Narayana smiled and said ” Tathastu. Let it be so. My dear Parvati, to fulfill your desire I will appear in Nila-chala-dham. My temple will be famous for distributing My prasada. Whoever takes My prasada will be liberated. All of my prasada will be of¬fered to you first. Then only will the remnants become maha-prasada. This maha-prasada will be distributed to everyone without consideration. I will keep you next to Me. You will have your tem¬ple just behind Mine in the mner courtyard. Lord Shiva, because he neglected to give you maha-prasada, will stay at a distance. He will have his temple outside the courtyard.”

The Lord appeared in Puri as Jagannath. Parvati Devi is there in the name of Bimala. All of Jagannath s prasada is offered first to Bimala Devi. Then only is it distributed as maha-prasada. In Puri there is no distinction between low and high-casts for taking Jagannath maha-prasada. Jagannath maha-prasada is so pure that sastra says that a brahmana can take maha-prasada form the mouth of a dog. It can never be contaminated.

Eager to Hear

 Eager to Hear

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is to give chance to the people in general hearing about Kṛṣṇa, that's all. Either hearing Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra or hearing Bhagavad-gītā or hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, anything you like, hear about Kṛṣṇa. Try to hear about Kṛṣṇa in meek and humble attitude. Then gradually, everything will be revealed. Ataḥ śrī-kṛṣṇa-nāmādi na bhaved grāhyam indriyaiḥ [Cc. Madhya 17.136]. By simply speculation you cannot understand what is Kṛṣṇa, what is His name, what is His form, what is His quality, what is His pastimes. We cannot. Ataḥ śrī-kṛṣṇa-nāmādi na bhaved grāhyam indriyaiḥ. By these blunt senses we cannot understand what is Kṛṣṇa. Sevonmukhe hi jihvādau svayam eva sphuraty adaḥ. But if you engage yourself in His transcendental loving service, beginning with the tongue, sevonmukhe hi jihvādau... So hearing by the ear and chanting by the tongue is the supreme method recommended by all authorities. This is śravaṇaṁ kīrtanam.

śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ
smaraṇaṁ pāda-sevanam
arcanaṁ vandanaṁ dāsyaṁ
sakhyam ātma-nivedanam
[SB 7.5.23]

So we must be inquisitive. We must be very eager. That eagerness should be aroused: "Where kṛṣṇa-kathā is being taught, let me go there, let me hear." In this Vṛndāvana you will find, there are many places they are hearing about Kṛṣṇa. So either Vṛndāvana or anywhere else, wherever Kṛṣṇa is heard, that is Vṛndāvana. Not that Vṛndāvana is limited with a certain space. Vṛndāvana is transcendental. Tatra tiṣṭhāmi nārada yatra gāyanti mad-bhaktāḥ. Kṛṣṇa says, "I stay there where My pure devotees chant about Me." Yatra gāyanti mad-bhaktāḥ. So if you become pure devotee and if you chant this Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, you can create Vṛndāvana anywhere, any part of the world. Not that you have got to come here. You come here. That's all right because it is established, Vṛndāvana. When Kṛṣṇa comes here, whenever He comes on this planet, He comes here. There are so many devotees. Certainly there is meaning, there is importance of this dhāma. But still, if it is not possible to come here, you can create Vṛndāvana anywhere, provided you are a pure devotee and you are chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra without any offense. Just like we have got our New Vrindaban. This year we have seen practically how these American boys and girls, hundreds and thousands, always who are remaining, not less than five to seven hundred... And for one week continually, in Janmāṣṭamī, we observed Janmāṣṭamī festival. Actually it was as good as this Vṛndāvana, because the chanting of the holy name was going on and hearing about Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam was going on. There was tulasī plants, devotees, śrī-vigraha. Everything was there. So actually, it was replica of Śrī Vṛndāvana.

So therefore the most important thing is, to make advance in devotional service, to increase the appetite for hearing. Viṣvaksena-kathāsu yaḥ, notpādayed ratim, kathāsu ratim. Kathāsu means, rati means attraction to kathāsu, that means hearing. Śravaṇam. So this is the test, that anyone who is supposed to be advancing in devotional service, bhakti-yoga, the test will be how much he has awakened his intense desire for hearing about Kṛṣṇa.

Srila prabhupada/ Lecture on SB 1.2.8 -- Vrndavana, October 19, 1972:

Surrender unto the Supreme

 Surrender unto the Supreme

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

Narada Muni quotes from the instructions that the nine Yogendras imparted to Maharaja Nimi, maya is defined as “forgetfulness of one’s relationship with Krsna.” Actually, maya means “that which is not.” Thus it is false to think that the living entity has no connection with the Supreme Lord. He may not believe in the existence of God, or he may think he has no relationship with God, but these ideas are all illusions, or maya. Due to absorption in this false conception of life, a man is always fearful and full of anxieties. In other words, maya is the godless concept of life. One who is actually learned in the Vedic literature surrenders unto the Supreme Lord with great devotion and accepts Him as the supreme goal. When a living entity forgets the constitutional nature of his relationship with God, he is at once overwhelmed by the external energy. This is the cause of his false ego, his false identification of the body with the self. Indeed, his whole conception of the material universe arises from this false identification with the body, for he becomes attached to the body and its by-products. To escape this entanglement, he has only to perform his duty, namely, to surrender unto the Supreme Lord with intelligence, with devotion and with sincere Krsna consciousness.

Teaching of Lord Chaitanya / Chapter 4
